For the longest time I heard people talking about the benefits of CBD. I was skeptical because I had never used it and it seemed like the next hyped up thing that isn't as great as everyone leads on.

It wasn't until I developed a very intense chest pain that would just not go away. At first I thought I was over training my chest but after 6-months of laying off chest exercises and trying pain meds, nothing was helping. One day it got so bad I thought I was having a heart attack but after being checked out I was told I have Costochondritis; an inflammation of the connective tissue of the sternum and ribs, most likely connected to my auto-immune disease.

Though a relatively benign issue it was still messing up my day and impacting my workouts. I could not bend over or reach across my body without feeling like my chest was going to crack open.

I finally decided to give CBD a try and I can say it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

I began taking a couple drops in the morning when the stiffness and pain was the worst and after about 20 mins, I was mobile and pain free. My pain would go from a 7-9 down to a 0-1. It went from feeling like my chest was cracking open to a slight ache. Not only was my pain better but my recovery from workouts was better as well. My stiffness while sleeping and after waking was significantly lessened.

I immediately became a believer.

So what is CBD?

It is not THC which is the part of cannabis that gets you high. CBD is derived from hemp plants which is considered the cousin of the weed plant. It has no psychoactive effect.

The body naturally has cannabinoid receptors that are located throughout the body. These receptors have influence over pain, appetite, memory and mood. The body has these receptors because it naturally produces its own CBD but in small amounts.

When you take exogenous CBD it binds to these receptors and produces an anti-inflammatory and relaxation effect.

Can you overdose on it?

The short answer is no. CBD is safe to take, if you accidentally take too much you might feel super groggy and relaxed but that is it. Some do experience the runs if they take too much but it's not common. It also classified as non-habit forming.

What are some other benefits?

It helps reduce and or eliminate seizures as well as aids in anxiety and sleep disorders. It has also been shown to help people with MS and Arthritis. Dogs also have the same cannabinoid receptors so dogs can benefit from CBD supplementation as well.

One of the coolest benefits aside from pain is its possible impact on deep sleep. An extremely important time for the brain to heal and consolidate memory. With the addition of CBD you can improve those deep sleep cycles. Which is key for neuronal health and overall cognitive health.

Is it legal?

Yes, in all 50 states it is legal. It is considered a supplement and not a drug. Each state has its own laws on CBD so you have to check your local laws.

Where can I get It?

You can typically find CBD at most grocery stores such as Whole Foods and Sprouts. You can also order it online from Amazon and other online stores. I prefer to get mine at my local dispensary but you can try out different ones to find the right one for you. A popular online company called Pure Kana ships all over the US and is highly recommended.

How much should you take?

This depends on the person but it is recommended to start with a low dose based off of your weight.

I have made a little chart to help figure out the right dose for you. You of course should read the bottle first to understand their recommended dosage.

Many people have started using CBD to aid in recovery after the gym. With its pain and anti-inflammatory effect as well as aid in better sleep, it is definitely a great addition to any athletes or gym rats routine.

Next time you are thinking about getting a new supplement give CBD a go!
